Reconstructed Magazine's profile

Volume 1: Light Upon Light

Reconstructed is a creative magazine and conversation space between all Muslims, including Muslim-heritage folks and individuals with evolving proximity to Islam, that recognizes religion is a non-linear journey. Founded by queer, Black, and Shi’a Muslims, we assume our humanity and uplift those who have been most marginalized within, and outside of, the Muslim Ummah.
We encourage individuals who engage with Reconstructed to see a multiplicity of realities within Islam -  each as beautiful and complex as the others. In doing so, we invite you to both de- and re- construct your ideas of what it means to carry closeness to Islam.
While we began as and are technically a magazine, we have been pushed to evolve into much more and think critically about our roles as curators and space-makers. We partner closely with a few inclusive masjids and organizations like Masjid al-Rabia, Believers Bail Out, and other justice-seeking Muslim orgs to throw events, hold workshops, and amplify artists across modalities and with varying proximities to Islam. At this point, Reconstructed feels more like a project than anything else, but it also will continue to grow into itself, as it has over the last 3 years, into something that is nourishing, validating, inspiring, educational, and makes people feel whole in their many identities.
